Gladys' Home

Gladys opened her home to me while in Las Calabasas.  It is the first home one sees when entering the campo, and is the favorite gathering place for the residents.  Her husband runs a little market in the left half of the house.  Gladys' eldest son is away at school; her two younger sons, Jonah, 12, and Angelou, 10, are delightful.  Although my Spanish was limited, the entire family was patient and selflessly kind.

The house (pink & green) & the market (blue).  That's Kelly's little sister on the porch.

Dominicans love to use color on their homes.  As a quilter, I found Gladys' front door quite intriguing.

Like the other houses of the campo, Gladys had a chicken coop in the back.  She keeps various types of chickens, complete with cute chicks.

The cooking shed is just behind the house.  Although Gladys does have a propane stove top, she still needs to do her longer cooking outside on a wood stove.

The wood stove.

Not pictured are the pig shed, tucked behind the chicken coop, and the outhouse.  A few years ago, a group of young men from Creighton Prep, the Jesuit high school of Omaha, came to Las Calabasas and built each home a new outhouse.  The residents remember these students with great affection.
